Pre-task preparation 1 A brainstorming鈥攚hat can we buy in a supermarket? Ask Ss to think of things they can buy in a supermarket. Have them make lists of food and drinks in groups. 2 A game鈥擳he Odd One out Have Ss look at the flashing pictures of several groups of food items, and find out a different one in each group. Example: 眉 meat, chicken, sausages, carrots 眉 lemonade, water, Coke, ice-cream, juice, tea 眉 cakes, biscuits, milk, bread, chocolate cake 眉 pineapple, banana, tomato, pear, orange, apple, strawberry While-task procedure 1 New vocabulary items a) Food items Introduce the following new vocabulary items using pictures: peaches, steak, crabs, squid, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, 7-up, lemonade, fruit juice. b) Different sections in a supermarket 脴 Culture Note Supermarket: Most people in the United States shop for food in supermarkets, where they can buy all their groceries in one store. Supermarkets typically have separate departments for foods, such as baked goods, meat, fruit, and vegetables. 脴 Have Ss recall the game鈥斺淭he odd one out鈥, and tell them that foods can be put into different groups: Fruit, Meat, Fish, Vegetables, and Drinks. Some more food sections in a supermarket are: Frozen food, Dairy products, Bread, Snacks, Rice and noodles. 脴 Ask Ss to read aloud all the food items in different sections from page 39 to page 40, and then finish Write on page 40 脴 Have more able Ss think of some other food items that can be found in a particular section. 2 Countable and uncountable nouns a) Teach the difference between countable and uncountable nouns through a set of examples. e.g. an orange鈥攖wo oranges 鈥 some orange juice a banana 鈥 two bananas some noodles some ice some water b) Ask Ss to pick out the items (pictures) we can count and name it in English. e.g. steak, tomatoes, coffee, biscuits, ice-cream, butter, peaches, jam, onions, cheese, crabs, lettuce, 7-up, squid, eggs 3 Look and learn on pages 39, 40 a) Play the recording of the dialogue b) Full-Class Repetition: repeat sentence by sentence after the recording. c) Group Repetition: Ss are divided into 3 groups. Group 1 repeat Mum鈥檚 lines. Group 2 repeat Kitty鈥檚 line. Group 3 repeat Ben鈥檚 line. d) Choral Conversation: Groups 1, 2 and 3 practice the dialogue, without model. e) Group conversation: Three Ss form a small group. Practise the conversation in groups of three. f) Group conversation: Use the model dialogue as a guide to create their own conversations, using vocabulary of their choice. (They can use any foods they wish.) 4 More oral practice: In the supermarket The following dialogues are for Ss to read and act, complete the sentences by putting in names of different food items or sections in a supermarket. a) S1: Here we are. S2: Where鈥檚 our shopping list? S1: Here it is. Can you get a trolley, please? b) S1: We need to buy some drinks. Let鈥檚 get some _____ at the _____ section. I like _____. S2: There鈥檚 lots of fruit at the _____ section. Can we buy some _____ and _____? S1: Sure. I鈥檇 also like some _____ and _____. c) S1: We need some steak and _____. Let鈥檚 go to the _____ Section. S2: I see some ice-cream at the _____ section. Can I go and get some? S1: Of course. We can also get some _____ there. d) S1: I can smell some nice cakes and _____. Where is the _____ section? S2: It鈥檚 over there, next to the _____ section. I can smell some really nice chocolate! S1: This supermarket is so big! I like shopping here. Post-task activity 1 More Reading: Food shopping a) Have Ss read the following article on food shopping silently. Food Shopping In the past, people shopped for fruits, vegetables, bread, and meat at small food stores and at open markets. Before there were refrigerators, it was difficult to keep food fresh for a long time, so people shopped almost every day. Life today is very different from the past. Refrigerators keep food fresh so people don鈥檛 have to shop every day. People also have very busy lives. They have time to shop for food only once or twice a week. Nowadays, most people go to just one place. They can buy fruit, bread, meat, fresh vegetables, and frozen food at a big supermarket. Most supermarkets have different sections for food, such as baked goods, meat, fruit, and vegetables. Today, some people even shop on the Internet. They order food online, and restaurants deliver it to their home! b) Ask individual Ss to read aloud the article paragraph by paragraph. c) Have Ss take notes on the differences between peoples shopping habits in the past and today. For example:
d) Have more able Ss retell the contents. 2 Making Supermarket Big Books Encourage Ss to go to different supermarkets and look at the section boards and food labels there.
